No Doubt

No Doubt, which was formed in Anaheim, California back in 1986, is an American rock band that was consist of Gwen Stefani (vocalist), Tom Dumont (guitarist), Tony Kanal (bassist), and Adrian Young (drummer).

Inspired by madness, No Doubt is a punk band that was initially consisted of lead vocalist John Spence, keyboardist Eric Stefani, and backup vocalist Gwen Stefani.  

But while playing around Anaheim, they recruited Tony Kanal, bassist.

Gwen Stefani became the lead vocalist when Spence committed suicide in 1987, and they recruited Adrian Young and Tom Dumont.

The single “Don’t Speak” from the album “Tragic Kingdom,” their diamond-certified album, placed at #1 spot on the ‘Billboard Hot 100 Airplay’ chart.

 

Nirvana

One of the most popular and iconic bands, Nirvana was formed in the 1990s, with guitarist and lead singer, the influential Kurt Cobain.

Their music was grunge, a combination of noise pop and heavy metal music.

Nirvana changed how people perceive music and society in general.

Even after Cobain died, their music’s legacy stays, as it continued to influence the US in the 90s.

Also stylized as ‘N Sync, the boy band was formed in Orlando, Florida in 1995.

However, they’re signed by BMG Ariola Munich (Germany).

This group consists of JC Chasez, Joey Fatone, Chris Kirkpatrick, Lance Bass, and of course, Justin Timberlake.

In 1997, *NSYNC self-titled debut album was successfully released in Europe, but later, they entered the US market with “I Want You Back.”

After legal battles with Bertelsmann Music Group, former record label, and Lou Pearlman, former manager, “No Strings Attached (2000), sold more than 1 million copies in only one day, and after a week, 2.4 million copies.

The group also had multiple nominations at the Grammys and performances, including those in the Super Bowl, Olympic Games, and World Series.

They also recorded and performed alongside greats, such as Britney Spears, Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson, and Elton John.

They’re also recognized as one of the “Top 25 Teen Idol Breakout Moments of all time” by Rolling Stone. 

Meanwhile, in this solo career, Timberlake became a 10-time Grammy winner.

 

Night Ranger

They’ve been around for over three decades since forming in 1979, and they’ve been known for ‘Sister Christian,’ their popular song.

After touring with Foreigner and Journey, the group released their first album in 1981, with songs, such as “Sentimental Street,” Sing Along,” and “Don’t Tell Me You Love Me.”

In 1988, they returned with the “Seven Wishes” album following a 2-year hiatus, with hits that include “Sister Christian” and “You Can Still Rock in America.” 

Every few years, they continued releasing albums, such as ‘35 Years and a Night in Chicago.’

The iconic rock band is one of the most influential bands of their time, as they’re also able to stay updated with the changing preference of the audience.

Nevertheless, they’re one of those bands that have helped in shaping American society and culture through their music.

 

Nickelback

Emerging from Hanna, Alberta, Canada is Nickelback that was formed in 1995.

The band consists of Chad Kroeger (guitars and vocals), Ryan Peake (guitars, keyboards, and backing vocals), Mike Kroeger (bass), and Daniel Adair (drums); however, it had several drummer changes, and finally for its current lineup is Ryan Vikedal, replacing Adair.

This group succeeded commercially and internationally, selling over 50 million album copies worldwide.

Part of its significant achievement was being recognized as the ‘most successful rock group of the decade’ (2009) by Billboard; its best-selling rock song, “How You Remind Me” was also the fourth best song overall.

Nickelback is positioned as the #7 top artist of the decade by Billboard, having four of its albums among its list of the decade’s top albums.

“All the Right Reasons,” its best-selling album features their top hits, ‘Far Away,’ ‘Photograph,’ and ‘Rockstar.’

Its album “Dark Horse” also succeeded and was received well in the mainstream (2008).

In 2014, they released “No Fixed Address,” their 8th album, and then in 2017 “Feed the Machine.”

 

Neurotic Outsiders

The British-American rock group was composed of Matt Sorum and Duff McKagan (Guns N’ Roses), Steve Jones (Sex Pistols), and John Taylor (Duran Duran).

The first line-up of the supergroup included Steve Stevens and Billy Idol alongside McKagan and Sorum; however, Jones and Taylor replaced them later.

In September 1996, they released an album on Maverick Records, and then toured North America and Europe briefly.

This album, which was their first release, is out of print; the Angelina 5-song EP (1997) followed it up even if it was a Japanese-only release.

In April 1999, they reunited at the Viper Room.

 

Nazareth

From Fife, Scotland, the Scottish hard rock band formed in 1968 and had a few hits in the UK and other Western European countries (the 1970s).

The remaining members of the Shadettes, a semi-professional local group, formed the band; Dan McCafferty (vocals), Pete Agnew (bass), Manny Charlton (guitars),and Darrell Sweet (drums). 

The band was inspired by the Rolling Stones and the Beatles.

Their name was inspired by Nazareth, Pennsylvania that was also cited in the classic song “The Weight.”

Their “Hair of the Dog” (1975) helped them establish an international audience, and it featured hits, such as “Hair of the Dog” and “Love Hurts,” a cover ballad.

They continue recording and touring.

They had several changes throughout the years, but different line-ups have continued making studio albums and touring in the 80s and 90s, even if their popularity declined because some of their albums didn’t receive a release either in the US or UK.

However, their material was also destroyed in the Universal Fire (2008) among other artists.

 

New York Dolls

The American rock band, which was formed in 1971, shouldn’t be forgotten in this list of popular bands that start with N.

The group was one of those who pioneered the early punk rock scene together with the Velvet Underground and the Stooges.

They’re one of the most influential glam metal and punk movement bands of the last 20 years, according to the Encyclopedia of Popular Music (1995).  

This group influenced other groups, including the Ramones, Sex Pistols, the Damned, and Guns N’ Roses.

The band disbanded (again) after a 2011 British tour alongside Alice Cooper.
